BOWLS: Stanthorpe players were bested by Warwick 166-121 in the battle for the Maroon Shield in indoor bowls on Friday.

The shield is in memory of the Maroon family which was in business in Warwick for decades, to the 1990s.

Competitions between Warwick and Stanthorpe associations are played each March in Warwick and each November in Stanthorpe.

Each association fields as many teams as possible on the day. There were five teams from each association at the St Mary's Indoor Bowls Hall in Warwick on Friday. Three games of triples were played by each team.

The best team from Stanthorpe with 29 points was Bob Watson, Les Fletcher and Mavis Pettiford. Dee and Trevor Campbell and Ed Diery had 42 points to be the best performed Warwick team on the day.

Stanthorpe team captain Geraldine Torrisi said she had been playing indoor bowls for three decades.

"I did try outdoor bowls but didn't like it,” she said.

"We play friendly indoor bowls games on a Wednesday. The Maroon Shield is the only competition for the two associations.”

After playing indoor bowls at Lightning Ridge and Young in New South Wales, Margaret Ternanov moved to Warwick and is now captain of the Warwick indoor bowls team for the Maroon Shield.

While games in Stanthorpe are played weekly in the Anglican Church Hall and occasionally at Glen Aplin, the Warwick association has four clubs, St Andrew's, St Mark's, Central and Wesley which have weekly games.

Ternanov moved from New South Wales to Warwick to be closer to her daughter and is now a playing member of the Central club.

"We practice during the week but not before the start of the Maroon Shield.

"The days against Stanthorpe are all about the shield.”
