A Stanthorpe man was nabbed red-handed trying to steal a $700 barbecue from a High Street shop.
Cody Bret Casley eyed off the Weber barbecue in the home improvement and decor store on March 15 before a failed escape with the expensive cooker.
Police prosecutor Steve de Lissa said the 46-year-old used a trolley for a getaway vehicle before being confronted by a bystander.
“During the theft he proceeded to wheel it to his car on Victoria Street where he was witnessed by another person,” he said.
“While he was attempting to put the barbecue in his car the witness screamed out ‘Where the hell are you taking that?’.
Sergeant de Lissa said after a short confrontation with the witness, Casley left behind the barbecue and drove off.
Casley pleaded guilty to possessing tainted property and was placed on a good behaviour bond for nine months.
No conviction was recorded.
