Goondiwindi was the home ground for the annual Lions District Convention over the weekend, with part of the events raising money for Millmerran residents.
The not-for-profit boasts an impressive community of 69 clubs from around southeast to southwest Queensland.
Lions District Governor Savva Argyrou said the annual convention was a perfect opportunity for members to reconnect and share their ideas on shaping the future of the district.
“It was a testament to the difference that can be made when people come together with a shared purpose,” he said.
Events ran across the weekend, with Saturday’s dunk a past district Governor event raising more than $400 for Millmerran Downs residents affected by the recent catastrophic bushfires.
The 201Q1 convention shone a spotlight on the power of bringing communities together and the impact of not-for-profit organisations like the Lions Club, Apex and Rotary.
Opening the convention was Goondiwindi mayor Lawrence Springborg, with special guests including bush poet Murray Hartin, Lions District international director Tim Irvine, local pharmacist Lucy Waller and Julia Spicer OAM.
Goondiwindi Lions Club treasurer Antionette Kruger said after an incredible amount of planning by the clubs, it was rewarding to see receive such positive feedback.
“It was nearly two years of planning, but to see our Lions pull together to make it a
reality was amazing,” she said.
“To get the positive feedback after makes all the planning and hard work a pleasure.”
