A man accused of a brutal assault will remain behind bars after a magistrate deemed him an “unacceptable risk” to the community.

Kayne Kevin Healy was remanded in custody after his bail was denied on Monday, October 9 in Warwick Magistrates Court.

The man faces a string of charges relating to a spate of alleged crimes in the Stanthorpe area, including unlawful stalking, assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and in company and an enter dwelling with intent charge, and has not yet entered a plea.

Police allege that on October 4 the father-of-four and two accomplices went to a man’s caravan before allegedly brutally bashing the man.

In their opposition to bail, police prosecutor Sergeant Steve di Lissa told the court the alleged beating was so bad the man was hospitalised with broken bones, including his forearm and ribs.

Police allege the attack was carried out by Mr Healy and two others with the use of a broken shovel handle and another unknown wooden object

The court was told that while the man was recovering in hospital, one of the alleged co-offenders came to the ward and took photos of the man, speaking to police before sending them to Mr Healy.

Magistrate Virginia Sturgess told the court Mr Healy’s matters were “very serious” and led to “very serious injuries”.

“Considering the facts of the alleged offences … he would represent an unacceptable risk of failing to appear, reoffending or interfering with witnesses,” the magistrate said.

Via videolink, the man lowered his head and appeared to sob quietly.

Mr Healy’s bail was refused and he was remanded in custody.

The matter will be mentioned again on October 23.
