Making the move to the region from Brisbane as a first-year teacher three decades ago, educating Stanthorpe’s next generation has proven a lifetime calling for Jenny Mann.

The long-time Stanthorpe State School teacher has been voted in by Border Post readers as the town’s best teacher for 2021.

Mrs Mann said the area had quickly become a long-term home for her and her family, with she and her husband purchasing a hobby farm in the area and sending their son to Stanthorpe S.S. for his primary education.

“This is my first school, I’ve been here for 30 years. I just wanted to inspire young children to achieve their best,” she said.

“I teach Prep now. It’s very rewarding, it’s my favourite year level to teach.

“It’s so rewarding to see and they learn so much in that first year. I have taught other year levels, but Prep is by far my favourite.”

Proud to form a pivotal role in the beginning of each student’s learning journey, Mrs Mann described being able to teach children fundamental skills such as reading and literacy as a superpower.

“The children come to Prep not being able to read or learn, and when they leave Prep they’re these amazing little readers,” she said.

“One of my favourite things is watching the children as they continue to learn, and when they leave school and find their vocation.

“That’s the beauty of living in a small town, you can continue to sort of watch the children as they continue to grow.

“It’s always sad to see them go, but it’s good to see them go on.”

Mrs Mann was one of more than a dozen teachers in the running for the title of Stanthorpe’s best teacher for this year.
