Five things that shock tourists about Australia

A visit from friends during the construction of a Granite Belt holiday destination was all the inspiration the owners needed to create a much-needed accommodation option for the region.

Nestled away in the hills of Glen Aplin and edging on Girraween National Park sits the Irish charm of Glen Lough Cabins.

Glen Lough Cabins owners Sheila and Pat O’Boyle made the selfless and heartfelt decision to build a wheelchair-friendly cabin during construction of the additional three cabins located on the property.

Their efforts have not gone unnoticed, with few of its kind available in the region.

Since the cabin’s announcement on their Facebook page, the post has received an abundance of positive comments from guests who have stayed as well as supportive community members from the Granite Belt region.

In the short two weeks the cabin has been open, Mrs O’Boyle said it has attracted a waitlist of travellers keen enjoy an accessible and tranquil experience.

“We opened on a Wednesday and by Friday we had our first disabled guest stay,” she said.

“The reaction has just amazed me, so there’s obviously such a big need out there for a disability cabin.”

The ramp isn’t the only attractive feature of the wheelchair friendly cabin, boasting a full wet room, non-slip floors throughout and a full deck for guests to enjoy the tranquil surroundings.

Mrs O’Boyle said the inspiration to construct the wheelchair accessible cabin came about when close friends visited during construction of the additional three cabins.

“We have friends in wheelchairs and one of them came down here when we were in the planning stage, and he just loved our property,” she said.

“We thought we’ve got to build one (disability cabin) so that everyone can come here, because we call this our little slice of heaven.”

Despite the cabin‘s construction being more costly than those which are non-wheelchair accessible, Mrs O’Boyle said there wouldn’t be an additional cost to its guests.

“We can’t see why disabled guests should have to pay more to have the same type of holiday as a fully abled person, there’s just no way we could charge more,” she said.

Due to the peaceful nature offered by Glen Lough, Mrs O’Boyle said there were no future plans of constructing additional cabins.

“If we put more than four cabins in it would actually ruin what we have tried to create, because you’ve got the peace and quiet, great views, tranquillity and if we put in more cabins it would actually ruin it.”
