What started as an after school coffee van business for James Morgan Humble and sister Helena in 2019, has evolved into a self-starting coffee roasting business called Altitude 925.
The 17-year-old roasts coffee once a week on his parents acreage property in Applethorpe and said the business idea was sparked from his own affection for coffee.
“I just love drinking coffee, especially speciality coffee and making the perfect beverage,” he said.
“Coffee is something most of us drink and I wanted to be a part of that.”
James said the name of his business was inspired by the importance of the altitude where coffee beans are grown and roasted.
The numbers 925 in the name are reflective of the altitude above sea level where the coffee is roasted.
Altitude 925 has a range of boutique tea and four blends of coffee – decaf, light, medium and strong roasts.
The Humble siblings still operate their coffee van, originally called Coffee Shot Box, taking it to events in the region, including the Stanthorpe markets at the showgrounds, Stanthorpe Gremlins matches at Sullivan Oval and other sporting events.
Altitude 925 is sold locally exclusively at Em’s Cafe, but can be ordered online through the Altitude 925 website.
James said since Em’s Cafe opened he had been getting daily inquiries from customers about his product.
“It’s been really good, the cafe is like a shopfront and I am able to both promote and sell my product,” he said.
The recent school graduate is proud of his achievements thus far but is keen to expand the business.
“I would like to keep developing the roast and slowly bring it out to other areas like Warwick, Toowoomba and Brisbane,” he said.
