Fresh from a somewhat unusual senior year at Stanthorpe State High School due to COVID, Karma O’Reilly will be vying for the 2022 Apple and Grape Young Ambassador title.
The Stanthorpe teen said it wasn’t something she’d thought about until her dad said the Rotary Club of Stanthorpe was looking for someone to sponsor.
“I am currently on my gap year, and so I see it a chance to witness our wonderful community. not from the perspective of a grade-obsessed student,” she said.
“I feel I’ll be able to gain a greater appreciation for our community as well as heightened pride from being part of it.”
The 18-year-old said although she wasn’t sure of the path she wanted her life to take after school, she was passionate about learning.
“I am not sure exactly what course I will undertake next year, but I love reading, writing, international politics history, so I guess there are endless opportunities for me,” Ms O’Reilly said.
When she is not working as a vineyard hand for dad Peter O’Reilly, Karma can be found working at Red Rooster.
Karma will be supported in her Apple and Grape fundraising efforts by sponsor, the Rotary Club.
President Julia Hassall praised the teen for taking on the challenge.
“Karma is an amazing young lady and mature beyond her years,” Mrs Hassall said.
“She’s somebody with great values and she really respects this community and wants to learn so much more about it.
“She has great values and spirit that embodies everything it means to be Stanthorpian.”
Apple and Grape president Russell Wantling said he couldn’t be happier to see Rotary partner with a Young Ambassador.
“Rotary is all about community at their core, and to see them agree to again be a part of this wonderful community festival is an absolute credit to each and every member,” he said.
