A South East Queensland company specialising in mould removal has recorded a 500 per cent spike in inquiries this year following months of wet weather and high humidity rates.
Mould Men chief executive Gerard Murtagh said mould was spreading in homes across the region at records levels.
Mr Murtagh said suburbs from Noosa to Ballina had been engulfed in unseasonal levels of humidity at almost 100 per cent which was adding to the spread of mould.
“We have never seen as much awareness around mould and never seen so much of it around,” Mr Murtagh said.
“The direct weather patterns in the rain and humidity makes the perfect conditions.”
Mr Murtagh he advised people to ensure their homes were cross ventilated.
“You can’t just leave your house closed up, it has to have airflow through,” he said.
“We recommend using aircon on dry cycle which will help remove moisture.
“If you’re cleaning it up use disposable paper towels and throw them away. If it’s rags, make sure they’re changed regularly.”
Mr Murtagh further advised customers to call in the experts if the mould had spread to more than a dinner plate in size or was found in multiple parts of a property.
“We find it can grow at faster rates than people are cleaning it, then they end up spreading it throughout their home,” he said.
“Exposure to mould is not good.”
