The rapid spread of Covid across the South Burnett has sent demand for the vaccine and booster jab skyrocketing, especially with children only weeks away from returning to school.
Queensland Health data indicates there were 273 confirmed cases of Covid in the South Burnett local government area as of 7pm on Tuesday.
Nearly 88 per cent residents aged 15 and up were fully vaccinated against Covid as of Monday, with nearly 92 per cent having had their first dose.
Children aged between five and 11 were made eligible for the Covid jab from Monday and thousands across the state have already received their first dose.
This age bracket will receive two smaller doses of the Pfizer vaccine than those aged 12 and up, with an eight-week period between jabs.
The vaccine rollout comes as the State Government delays the beginning of the Queensland school year in a bid to prevent children being in class at the anticipated peak of the Omicron wave later this month.
Prep to Year 10 students will return to the classroom on February 7 while Years 11 and 12 will begin remote learning on January 31, with all schools to remain open to supervise the children of essential workers.
Darling Downs Health acting executive lead for health emergency operations Michelle Forrest emphasised the importance of the vaccine in protecting children and the wider community against Covid.
“Although most children tend to experience only a mild illness when compared to adults, severe illness and rare long-term complications of Covid have still been reported in Australia and internationally.
“Vaccination is one of the best ways to protect your child from getting seriously ill.
“Additionally, children who are vaccinated are less likely to transmit the virus to other family members, friends, and members of their community who are at risk of becoming very unwell.”
While supply shortages and increased demand have made it difficult for South Burnett residents to book in their Covid vaccines, GPs and pharmacies still have spots available this month.
