ARTISTS and police groups are getting creative when it comes to keep kids out of trouble.

According to Sergeant Rod Gelderblom of South Burnett PCYC, mural projects like the one recently painted at the Telstra substation in Murgon are great for the community.

"PCYC mural projects are innovative ways of keeping kids off Murgon's streets and providing them with legal creative outlets,” Sgt Gelderblom said.

Sgt Gelderblom said it was a problem when kids started to tag and graffiti buildings.

Independent arts coordinator Olivia Everitt organised the most recent Murgon mural.

Ms Everitt teamed up with South Burnett PCYC and Telstra, as well as artists Bronte Naylor and Kane Brunjes.

"I saw the site and thought it was perfect...the design referenced sites within 300 metres of the Telstra wall and reflected the community,” Ms Everitt said.

Ms Everitt said the contemporary design combined bright pops of colour with locally sourced material.

"The face in the mural is of one of Kane's friends,” she said.

The artists also ran a free youth art workshop teaching stencil techniques.

"Young people in regional areas don't have particularly good access to art programs...programs like this provide these opportunities,” Ms Everitt said.

"It's a good alternative to street tagging and shows a legal pathway to follow.”
