Severe storm warning for flood-smashed North, South Burnett

The heavily-soaked Burnett region isn’t out of the woods, with severe storms expected to hit the region again over the next couple of days, potentially bringing large hail and dangerously heavy falls.

Wild storms slam into southeast Queensland

Authorities have warned the flood-hit Burnett is still in deep water with the possibility of a supercell storm bringing life-threatening flooding, large hail and destructive wind gusts to the region.

Bureau of Meteorology hazard response coordinator Brooke Pagel said severe storms were expected to drench the North and South Burnett regions over the next two days, bringing further flooding to some of the region’s hardest hit towns such as Dallarnil.

The North Burnett town, which was in the thick of recovery after January’s flooding disaster, received more than 400mm of rain in just a few hours at the end of last week.

Ms Pagel said while the South Burnett was on Thursday expected to receive 25 to 50mm of rain and the North Burnett 10 to 15mm, the already saturated catchments meant flash flooding was a real risk.

The storms are expected to bring damaging winds of 90km/h across the region and ease by the weekend.

Ms Pagel also warned residents to remain vigilant with the potential for the development of supercell storm, capable of bringing about life-threatening flooding, large hail, and destructive winds of up to 125 km/h.

She said it was critical residents keep an eye on the Bureau of Meteorology website, warning supercells “pack a punch” and can roll in extremely quickly.

Major alerts are current for several rivers across southeast Queensland including the Upper and Lower Brisbane rivers, Logan and Albert rivers, Bremer River and Warrill Creek, the Mary River, the Noosa River, and Condamine and Balonne rivers.
