A new eatery opened in Nanango on August 21, 2023.

Pop’s Coffee and Takeaway in Drayton St in the centre of town is owned by Darren Birthisel.

It is the third hospitality business the 55-year-old former Swickers employee has owned.

“I have moved to Nanango from Perth after separating from my wife of 35 years,” he said.

“I thought ‘why not give a new business a go?’

“I lived in Nanango about 20 years ago before moving to Victoria and South Australia, where I ran cafes.

“Nothing is pre-cooked. Everything is 100 per cent fresh as I make my own gravy, batter and burger patties.

“We buy everything we can locally,” Mr Birthisel said.

“We have given the venue a facelift with fresh paint, local artwork on the walls and a new kiddies area so the little ones can stay entertained with toys and crafts, while parents enjoy their coffee,” he said.

“Since opening on Monday, we’ve been pretty flat out and have received a great response and encouraging feedback from the community.

“We are open every day, so I’ve had to get used to the long days, but I love it.

“We currently have four staff members who are the chefs and barristers of Pop’s.

“We can’t wait to keep showing Nanango what we can offer.”
