The tragic death of a Womalilla man, who was killed when his motorbike collided with a kangaroo last night, has sent shockwaves through the tight knit community.

The 48-year-old man was killed when a kangaroo jumped out in front of his motorcycle just after 7.30pm on Thursday, the Queensland Police Service reported.

Initial investigations indicate the man sustained critical injuries when he was thrown from his vehicle. He died at the scene.

The kangaroo was also killed.

Mitchell officer-in-charge Sergeant Jeremy Smith said the incident “sent shockwaves through the community”.

“It’s a huge tragedy and a reminder for people to look after themselves and their family,” Sergeant Smith said.

“He’s been in this community for his entire life and it’s definitely going to have a ripple effect.

“Mitchell police station offers their condolences to family and friends.”

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the collision and will prepare a report for the coroner.
