An emerging rugby league star has been forced to front court after punching a teenager in the head as she struggled to break up a brawl, with a prosecutor warning the growing trend of street fights in Cherbourg is heading in a deadly direction.

The Murgon Magistrates Court heard the 17-year-old victim told police she had already passed four street fights on May 8 when she came across a fifth fight between two girls, which she attempted to break up.

Police prosecutor Barry Stevens said as the girl attempted to intervene, Traevonnah Gungalou Fisher, 18, stepped in and punched the other girl in the head, knocking her to the ground and causing her nose to bleed.

“The child fell to the ground. She was dazed and her face was swelling,” he said.

The next day Murgon State High School was placed in a lockdown when another brawl broke out across the road, with police arriving to find a large crowd of people fighting and swearing at each other.

Sergeant Stevens said police found Fisher involved in one of multiple brawls in the middle of the street.

As officers were attempting to talk to the people involved in the fighting, a group tried to drive off in a car before they were stopped by police.

Fisher, who remained on the street, armed herself with a large rock and appeared to be getting ready to throw it at the car when officers intervened.

“(Fisher) appears to be part of a problem that is very prevalent,” Sergeant Stevens said.

“Retribution for whatever reason, or organised fights in Cherbourg, will not be tolerated by the community.

“They are dangerous and eventually someone will die, and someone will be charged with unlawful striking or murder.

“One punch can kill.”

Fisher pleaded guilty to the assault occasioning bodily harm and public nuisance charges and was fined $500.

No conviction was recorded.
