A young mother with an ice addiction has faced a Kingaroy court for an offence revolving around her drug use.

Tiarney Leigh Johnston appeared before the Kingaroy District Court on Wednesday, February 15, where she was sentenced for contravening a parole order by driving while a relevant drug was present.

The court heard Johnston, 23, was sentenced to two years’ jail, suspended after time served, and three years’ probation at Brisbane District Court in July 2021.

Prosecutor Alex Stark said that sentence arose after Johnston stole a car which was used to take another car from a residence.

“(The car ended up) striking and running over the complainant,” Mr Stark said.

Defence barrister Francis Martin said Johnston struggled with drug addiction since 2014 and relapsed in July 2022, which landed her back in court.

“She hasn’t done drugs since and is on a program,” Mr Martin said.

“She got a private doctor within 10 days of being released from prison.”

Mr Stark and Mr Martin agreed in their submissions for Johnston’s probation order to be extended for 12 months.

Judge Gary Long SC said the submissions showed there was considerable effort on her part in terms of dealing with rehabilitation.

“You need to avoid any further relapses or breaches in the context that you are a young mother supporting young children,” Judge Long said.

Johnston was sentenced to an additional 12 months of probation, ending in July 2025.
