South Burnett man charged over threats to Jewish community

A 52-year-old man will face court in Nanango charged with threatening a Victorian Jewish community centre earlier this month via social media.

Detectives from the Counter-Terrorism Investigation Group have charged a Queensland man following investigations into threats made towards a Jewish community centre in Victoria.

It will be alleged the man made verbal threats in a social media post on Saturday, December 7.

Following investigations, Queensland Police located a 52-year-old Holland Park man in the Yarraman State Forest on Saturday night where he was arrested, and his mobile phone seized.

A statement from police released this week said there was nothing to indicate the man was involved with the arson of the Adass Israel Synagogue in Ripponlea in Victoria on Friday. December 6.

He has been charged with using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence and is due before Nanango Magistrates Court on January 16, 2025.

Investigations are ongoing.

A Queensland Police spokesperson issued a reminder that instances of serious vilification and hate crime were now a criminal matter.

“Everyone in Queensland has a right to feel safe and the QPS remains committed to community safety and engaging with people from across our culturally diverse society to help foster relationships and build upon platforms for community engagement,” the statement read.

“As a result of a recent legislative change in Queensland, instances of serious vilification and hate crime are now a criminal matter.

“Where instances of hate or vilification are reported to police, investigations will be undertaken to prosecute those responsible.

“Members of the public are encouraged to report incidents of hate crimes and serious vilification to the Queensland Police Service through Policelink 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
