What is Gaslighting?

A repeat DV offender has been warned police are trained to shoot knife wielders, after he marched towards officers with a knife during his latest offending.

The 43-year-old father, who cannot be named to protect his victim, has found himself back behind bars after he repeatedly attempted to push his way into his former partner’s home and car, flicked a lit cigarette at her and threatened police with a Stanley knife.

The man had only recently completed parole after serving time behind bars for similar offending, when he arrived at his victim’s home on June 1.

He first approached the residence at 8.30am demanding his jacket be washed, before behind told to leave.

He returned in the afternoon and told the woman to call his footy coach to pick him up.

The man was repeatedly told to leave before pushing his way into the home and “laughed and refused” when told to leave again.

Prosecutor Lisa Manns told the court the man flicked his lit cigarette at the woman.

The woman placed the children into her car and attempted to leave but the man forced his way into the car and grabbed a Stanley knife, slashing parts of the handbrake.

When police arrived and were informed of the knife in his pocket, the man placed it on the car roof.

Sgt Manns said while speaking to officers, the defendant reacted and grabbed the knife, threatening officers saying, “I’ll stick it up”.

An officer drew his taser in response and the man dropped the knife and was handcuffed.

While being taken to the police vehicle, he demanded a smoke and shouldered an officer when he was told no, before resisting being put in the vehicle.

Sgt Manns said the offender had placed himself in a “precarious” position with his behaviour.

“Police are actually trained that in relation to knives that it‘s not a taser that should be used, it should actually be a firearm because of the distance that can be covered in such a short period of time,” Sgt Manns said.

“It’s a very dangerous game to play by pulling a knife and walking towards the police.”

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair noted the man had breached this DVO 20 times previously, and told the man it was clear the orders “have lost value in your mind”.

The man pleaded guilty to three counts of contravening a domestic violence order, wilful damage, assaulting police and obstructing police.

He was sentenced to 12 months’ jail, with a parole release date set for September 1.
