Gayndah homeowner claims he was forced to stab intruder in terrifying incident

A Burnett father has described the moment he was forced to stab an alleged intruder in the neck multiple times, saying the man had smashed in his front door in a terrifying incident.

The altercation occurred just before 10pm on Thursday night, May 26, in Gayndah on the main street in town.

The homeowner, who asked not to be named, was at home when he heard shouting outside.

The dad said a man had come onto his property “yelling and carrying on” and he believe the intruder was drunk.

The man said the alleged intruder was told to leave the property and told the father, “I’m going up the road to have a cone, when I come back I’m going to kill you, your wife and your kids”.

The homeowner initially believed that was the end of the matter, but said the man returned and the father-of-four was forced to call triple-0.

The resident claims the other man began kicking in a glass sliding door, before ripping it off its railing and attempting to enter to home.

The homeowner said when the man bent down to pick up piece of shattered glass, he decided he needed to do more to protect his home and his family, and used a kitchen knife he had armed himself with earlier.

“I was making sure this prick was not getting in my house,” the father said.

“I’ve got four young kids, the only thing that was sitting on my mind was fight or flight and I’m gonna stop this bloke getting in my house.

“I attacked him – I’m sorry to say, I just keep stabbing him in the back of the shoulders and the neck until he stopped.”

The man said he and his wife rendered first aid until police and an ambulance arrived.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed paramedics attended the incident and transported a man with three neck wounds to Gayndah Hospital in a stable condition.

The homeowner, aged in his 40s, said he provided police with CCTV footage of the incident.

Despite the terrifying ordeal, the man said his children were doing well, with two sleeping through the altercation.

The man said the difficulties are ongoing and claims he and his wife have received death threats over the incident, with rumours swirling through the community.

“It travelled faster than Covid,” he said.

A police spokeswoman confirmed officers attended an incident in Gayndah on the night, but said no charges had been laid.

She said officers were yet to speak to the injured man and investigations were continuing.

“Police will interview him in due course,” she said.
