A mother-of-four who was convicted after a violent rampage through a country town was sent back to prison after helping a stranger steal bottles of vodka from a bottle shop.

Olga Lucille Chambers, 36, pleaded guilty to one count of stealing after a previous conviction in the Murgon Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Police prosecutor Pepe Gangemi said at about 6.15pm on June 25, a woman asked Chambers to help her steal some alcohol from the Ridge Cellars Bottle Shop in Murgon.

“She distracted the store clerk by asking him to retrieve a carton of beer from the cool room while she gestured to another co-offender to take three bottles of Smirnoff vodka from the shelf and leave,” Sergeant Gangemi said.

He said the offence was committed while Chambers was on parole.

The court heard Chambers had been released from prison only two months before the offending, on April 10, and was immediately sent back to prison after helping steal the alcohol.

On November 10, 2023, Chambers pleaded guilty to 36 offences including the serious assault of a person in a wheelchair, assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and intoxicated, stealing and multiple breaches of bail.

The court heard during Chambers’ November appearance that she went on a wild rampage through Murgon, where she threatened people with a steak knife and violently assaulted a random bystander.

On December 20, 2023, Magistrate Andrew Sinclair sentenced her to 12 months in prison.

At the time of her sentencing, Mr Sinclair said because Chambers continued to violate her parole, he did not believe she could be rehabilitated.

Chambers’ lawyer, Scott Sier, said she did not benefit at all from helping the co-offender in the most recent offending.

“She doesn’t have any idea why she decided to help this person steal vodka, and she doesn’t know the person. She just made a big error of judgement and benefited nothing from this,” Mr Sier said.

Mr Sier said Chambers was remorseful and admitted her actions were “stupid”.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair said it was a “real possibility” the parole board may not release Chambers from prison until her current sentence ends on November 12.

“You’re very silly to get yourself involved in stealing,” Mr Sinclair said.

He said despite not gaining any benefit from the stealing, she was still “100 per cent liable” for the offence.

He mentioned Chambers had a history of “regularly stealing” from bottle shops.

Mr Sinclair sentenced Chambers to three months in prison, wholly suspended for 12 months.

She was also ordered to pay $93 to the business she stole from.
