Neville Gillis flashes penis at two teenage South Burnett baristas, reducing one to tears

The man tried to blame his two teenage victims for his repulsive behaviour, claiming they flirted with him as they wiped the coffee machine clean.

Australia's Court System

An elderly man who flashed his penis to two teenage baristas on three separate occasions attempted to blame his victims for the disgusting acts, telling police they’d smiled at him and rubbed the spout of the coffee machine.

Neville Matthew Gillis pleaded guilty in the Murgon Magistrates Court to three counts of committing an indecent act in a public place.

Paying a visit to his favourite South Burnett coffee shop in February, Gillis asked a 19-year-old barista whether she was working alone before ordering a coffee and heading outside to wait on a council bench.

As the young woman brought the 67-year-old his coffee, he spread his legs and lent back with his hands behind his head, exposing his genitals through his shorts.

Gillis repeated this behaviour on March 9 and 15, this time exposing himself to another teenager who worked at the cafe.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Barry Stevens said the 18-year-old was so upset she went back into the cafe and cried.

“When he was interviewed, (Gillis) told police that the girls often flirted with him,” Sergeant Stevens said.

“He said they smiled at him and rubbed the spout of the coffee machine.”

Solicitor Fiona Albert said the offending was ‘out of character’ for her client, who’d never been to court in his life.

Ms Albert said her client suffered three strokes in recent years, which may have resulted in significant cognitive impairment.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair placed Gillis on probation for six months and no conviction was recorded.
