Australia's Shame: Horrifying trend in violence against women

After beating his ex-partner with a bat and urinating on her in a terrifying attack, a South Burnett man found himself back before the court after leaving menacing voice messages on her phone.

Appearing in Murgon Magistrates Court via videolink from jail, the man pleaded guilty to two counts of contravening a domestic violence order made in the District Court.

He cannot be named for legal reasons.

Listening to a voice message left by a private number on March 13, the victim recognised her ex-partner’s voice as he told her he was going to “f —k up her life”.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Barry Stevens read the disturbing details to the court.

“I'm going to drag into the deepest hole you crawled out of. I’m going to make sure you never see the children,” Sergeant Stevens read.

“I’m going to tell the child safety, so you can never see them ever again. You hear me?

“I'm going to drag you into the deepest hole and make sure you die.

“I’m going to f —k up your life and drag you back down to the mud where you came from.”

The woman received another phone call from a private number two days later when she was at a police station.

“The defendant’s voice can be heard repeating the aggrieved’s name several times before disconnecting the call,” Sergeant Stevens said.

The man has nine prior convictions for breaching a domestic violence order.

He was also previously charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm against this woman after he bashed her with a bat.

“The aggrieved was so frightening, she urinated and defecated,” Sergeant Stevens told the court.

He also urinated and spat on her.

Sergeant Stevens said the woman was seen by a doctor, who said if left untreated there is a chance she could have gone blind from her injuries.

The man was sentenced to 12 months’ jail.

Taking into account 27 days served in pre-sentence custody, Mr Sinclair set the man’s parole release date for September 1.
