What happens when you are charged with a crime?

A man who allegedly escaped police custody, climbed onto the roof of a Kingaroy home and then refused to get down during a dramatic hours-long siege has now been charged with more than 30 offences.

Police claim they first arrested the 25-year-old on Tuesday in relation to a string of property-related crimes across Cherbourg, Murgon, and Wondai in the two months leading up to his arrest.

The man was at that point charged with 19 offences including serious assault of a police officer, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, enter with intent, and wilful damage.

He was later that day transported to Kingaroy Hospital for further assessment, where he allegedly fled from police and climbed onto the roof of a house near Albert and Youngman Sts at about 2pm.

Police will allege the man refused to climb back down, remaining on the rooftop for hours before eventually being taken into custody just before 4pm.

It is understood the 25-year-old suffered a medical episode while on the roof and was taken back to hospital following his arrest.

He has now been charged with a further 11 offences including two counts each of serious assault of a police officer, wilful damage, going armed so as to cause fear, and one each of obstructing police, unregulated high-risk activities, stealing, burglary, and escape by persons in lawful custody.

The man is due to appear in Murgon Magistrates Court on August 30 and will be remanded in custody until that date.

A statement from the Queensland Police Service said it would be alleged that a Cherbourg woman and girl known to the man “intentionally and overtly” impeded officers attempting to bring the man back into custody.

They have each been charged with obstructing police and helping a prisoner at large, and are due to appear in court in the coming weeks.
