A “belligerent” Nanango teenager narrowly avoided causing a serious car accident after taking the law into his own hands at Kingaroy earlier this year.

Malyke Glen Graham, 19, pleaded guilty in Kingaroy Magistrates Court to one count of committing public nuisance, one count of wilful damage, one count of contravening the direction or requirement of a police officer and one count of common assault on Thursday.

Police prosecutor Lisa Manns said on March 17, 2023, Graham ran in front of a car, that narrowly avoided him due to the drivers diligence, on Haley Street, Kingaroy.

“When the driver asked him what he was doing he said ‘what the f--- are you going to do about it’,” Sergeant Manns said.

The court heard Graham crossed the road to another vehicle and kicked the driver’s rear door twice, causing damage.

“The police saw him and asked him to calm down,” Sgt Manns said.

“He was belligerent and refused to give his full name and address when asked by police,” she said.

Defence lawyer Sjaana Stephens said Graham was a Nanango resident and had no criminal history.

He and his family had allegedly endured seven months of continuous harassment and abuse from the man whose car was kicked, the court was told.

Ms Stephens said Graham has been educated to Year 8 and suffered dyslexia, schizophrenia and post traumatic stress disorder.

“He was upset and didn’t mean to run in front of the car,” she said.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair said he took Graham’s personal circumstances and age into consideration.

“Kingaroy is full of people who want to fight one another in the streets, it’s up to police to enforce the law,” Mr Sinclair said.

“You can’t take the law into your own hands,” he said.

Graham was fined $300.

No convictions were recorded.
