Krystal-Lee Jane Relph: Nanango mother given suspended jail term for giving police false name

A young mother of three knew she shouldn’t be behind the wheel when busted on the road by police but instead of owning up to her actions, she threw someone she loved under the bus.

Bizarre road rules that carry big fines

A Nanango mum’s attempt to get away with driving without a licence didn’t work for long, after she threw her cousin under the bus for a speeding fine.

Krystal-Lee Jane Relph, 28, knew she was disqualified from driving when police pulled her over for speeding on the D’Aguilar Hwy in Winya on March 2.

Rather than own up, Relph instead gave police her cousin’s name, and was able to provide the correct address and date of birth.

Looking up the details on their system, police checked a photo of Relph’s cousin that had a “like resemblance” to Relph.

The officers issued her with a ticket which they said would be sent in the mail and she left the scene.

Relph went on to use the same trick on March 11, when she was again intercepted at Coolabunia, before being let go without any further action.

The scheme quickly unravelled however when her cousin found out and went straight to the police.

Relph denied involvement when confronted by police, despite officers identifying her through bodycam footage.

Duty lawyer Jay Rose told Kingaroy Magistrates Court Relph was driving in March to collect her animals from Beaudesert, as they had been left at her former home due to flooding.

Relph pleaded guilty to speeding, two counts of giving false statements, and two counts of driving while court disqualified.

Police prosecutor Lisa Manns pushed for a jail sentence, noting Relph’s continued disregard for the law.

“(She) clearly has no regard for the court orders that were imposed on her,” Sergeant Manns said.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair noted this was Relph’s fourth driving unlicensed offence.

“If people keep driving after they’re disqualified they’re really making a mockery of the whole of the driving system,” Mr Sinclair said.

Relph was sentenced to three months’ jail, suspended for two years, and fined $1650.

She was also disqualified from driving for three years.
