Kingaroy mum sentenced for drug driving, failing to properly restrain son

A South Burnett mum has been sentenced in court after getting behind the wheel with methamphetamine in her system and six-year-old son not secured safely in the back of the vehicle.

Detectives charge 57 after massive South Burnett drug crackdown

A mum busted driving with meth in her system had her six-year-old child sitting in the back without a booster seat when police pulled her over.

The 28-year-old returned a positive drug test after she was pulled over by police on Youngman Street, Kingaroy on July 1.

Police prosecutor Pepe Gangemi told the Kingaroy Magistrates Court the woman had failed to properly restrain her son in a properly positioned booster seat, who was in the back seat of the car at the time.

She was stopped again by police while driving through Benarkin on July 24.

Sergeant Gangemi said the 28-year-old, who was on a provisional license at the time, tested positive for meth a second time.

“When the result came back from the (roadside drug test) she started driving the vehicle forward as police approached the driver’s side window,” he said

“She was told about the test and started yelling at police saying she wasn’t taking any drugs.”

The woman was told by the officers she was being detained and police removed the keys from her car.

She again yelled at the officers to give back her keys so she could lock the car.

Defence lawyer Mandy Reid said her client had issues with illicit drugs for many years, having used speed and meth daily for six years.

Ms Reid said the 28-year-old was now clean from drugs.

She pleaded guilty to two counts of drug driving while on a probationary licence, failing to ensure her child was properly restrained in the car and obstructing police.

She was placed on probation for 12 months, fined $413 and banned from driving for six months.

No conviction was recorded for the obstruct police offence.
