A young Cherbourg man’s repeated dire behaviour towards women and his drug use led him back to court on Tuesday after reoffending just days after his parole release.

Jayden David Cannon, 26, pleaded guilty to one contravention of a domestic violence order (aggravated offence), one count of failing to take reasonable care and precaution in respect of a syringe or needle, one count of obstructing a police officer and one count of possessing property suspected of having been used in connection with the commission of a drug offence.

Police prosecutor Barry Stevens said Cannon attended the property of a woman and began shouting abuse at her.

“He has contravened a domestic violence order on nine occasions prior,” Sergeant Stevens said.

“He became angry and threatened to punch her.

“Witnesses told him to leave and called the police as they were fearful she was going to be assaulted,” he said.

The court heard Cannon ran from police despite being told he was under arrest, before obstructing one of the officers.

Sergeant Stevens said police located a needle and syringe in his pocket.

“He committed these offences while on parole,” he said.

Defence solicitor Jay Rose said Cannon believed he had written permission to visit the property, which he didn’t.

“During his time in prison he had been assaulted and had spent a period of time in isolation for his own safety.

“He admits to being addicted to meth and this offending relates to his use of drugs,” she said.

The court heard Cannon has suffered depression and anxiety after witnessing the death of his brother, who was also a drug addict.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair said Cannon will spend the rest of his life in prison if he keeps going near this woman.

“You’re perfectly capable of working and I suggest you move a long way away from Cherbourg,” Mr Sinclair said.

“Within days of your last release from prison you started using drugs and committing offences.

“It’s difficult to say you’ve learnt anything from your time in prison.”

Cannon was sentenced to serve a concurrent three month sentence in prison for the aggravated domestic violence offending, with his 47 days of pre custody considered as time already served.

He was not further punished for the other three charges.

Mr Sinclair said Cannon would be eligible for parole in five weeks.

Convictions were recorded.
