A 39-year-old Kingaroy man has been charged with arson after he allegedly lit a South Burnett home on fire.

Police will allege Jamie Samual Johnson deliberately used an “unidentifiable flammable substance” to set fire to a Gooyong street home, which destroyed numerous items inside the property, a Queensland Police spokeswoman said.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said five crews, as well as police and paramedics, were called to the house at 5.30pm on Wednesday night.

On arrival smoke was reportedly billowing from the front of the house.

The spokeswoman said firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze in one section of the house by about 5.45pm, however the extent to the damage is currently unknown.

Mr Johnson faced Kingaroy Magistrates Court on Thursday afternoon charged with arson to structural building and inferring with fire apparatuses.

He was denied bail and will remain in custody until his next court appearance on February 3.
