Jade Hugh Cherry: Nanango man’s drug fuelled break-in spree

A magistrate has slammed a Nanango man over crime spree, telling him no one wants to be woken “by drug addicts banging on the doors, kicking the doors, breaking into their car and attempting to steal things to feed their drug habit.”

Detectives charge 57 after massive South Burnett drug crackdown

A Nanango man has been slammed by a magistrate after he fronted court for attempting to break into multiple homes during a drug-fuelled crime spree.

Jade Hugh Cherry faced Kingaroy Magistrates Court for offences including five charges of attempting to enter a dwelling and commit an indictable offence, as well as one charge of entering a vehicle to commit an indictable offence and one charge of obstructing police.

The charges mostly stemmed for a drug-fuelled crime spree on August 23, where Cherry attempted to break into multiple properties, cars and sheds in the Nanango area.

In one instance at about 3.30am, Cherry kicked the rear door of a house so hard in an attempt to enter, he woke the sleeping occupants.

Police told the court another victim opened his door to investigate noises before seeing Cherry approaching him and locking the door.

“I'm going to break in unless you open the doors,” Cherry said.

After being taken to the watch-house, Cherry became abusive with police during a stripsearch.

Defence lawyer Mandy Reid told the court her client had problems with ice usage and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Ms Reid said the qualified mechanic intended to find work at the Tarong mine once released from jail.

The father of two told the court his offending was not typical of his behaviour.

“It’s way out of character for me, my parents are shocked that I even attempted to steal something,” he said.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair said the offending was serious.

“The residents of Nanango and everywhere else for that matter don’t want to be woken up at three o’clock in the morning by drug addicts banging on the doors, kicking the doors, breaking into their car and attempting to steal things in order to feed their drug habit,” he said.

He was sentenced to 12 months’ jail, with a parole release date set for January 6, 2022.
