A former pub employee was hauled before the court on an animal cruelty charge following a booze-fuelled attack on a five-month-old puppy.

Police prosecutor Barry Stevens said CCTV footage caught the 60-year-old in the act.

“The footage shows the dog was walking near the defendant and started to walk away from her, she then kicked the dog in the rear very hard,” Sgt Stevens said.

“The dog had a pre-existing leg and joint condition,” he said.

Eleanor Jayne Simpson pleaded guilty to one charge of animal cruelty prohibited after kicking a five month old puppy at the Gold Spurs Hotel in Proston.

Defence lawyer Jay Rose said Simpson was drinking scotch on ice for a couple of hours prior and blacked out.

“She was heavily intoxicated (and) doesn't remember the incident,” Mrs Rose said.

“She has taken active steps to address her alcohol use.”

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair took into consideration Simpson’s early plea.

“I expect you to pay for the dogs rather expensive medical treatment,” Mr Sinclair said.

Simpson was sentenced to a $500 six-month good behaviour bond.

No convictions were recorded.
