A Nanango truck driver previously jailed for the strangling death of a teen prostitute and for strangling a sex shop worker, is facing a raft of new charges, including deprivation of liberty, supplying drugs and threatening violence.

John Joseph Beltrame, 58, faced the Kingaroy Magistrates Court on Monday and is accused of attacking an 18-year-old man he had hired to help him transport and supply drugs to another party, the court heard.

Police prosecutor Barry Stevens said he opposed bail and read Beltrame’s prior convictions to the court.

The alleged incidents happened while Beltrame and the man were travelling from the South Burnett to Rockhampton, on January 30, 2023.

Sgt Barry Stevens told the court Beltrame allegedly offered drugs to the young man before he got into the trucks sleeping cabin.

Sgt Stevens produced an affidavit from a sexual abuse expert which stated “Beltrame constantly demonstrated limited or no insight into his sexual or violent behaviours”.

“The defendant is considered well above average risk of sexual recidivism and there’s no evidence indicating he would abide by any court order or conditions,” Sgt Stevens read.

“The defendant shows high levels of psychopathic induction of lack of concern for others, for the safety and well-being of the community it is recommended in the strongest terms that he be remanded in custody,” he said.

Defence lawyer Mark Werner said the charges were one man’s word against another.

Beltrame was released on bail and is scheduled to appear at Kingaroy Magistrates Court on April 18, 2023.
