Police have named one of the two people whose bodies were found chained together in a dam north of Kingaroy as 51-year-old local resident Darryl Smith.

Detective acting Inspector Paul McCusker said investigations are still underway to identity the woman whose body was found alongside Mr Smith, with the woman believed to be in her 40s.

Mr Smith, who also went by the name Matthew Goldman, ran a shop in Kingaroy called Goldman’s Oracles ‘n’ Gifts with his wife.

Inspector McCusker said police were working on the theory the pair were chained to the floor of the dam, however they wouldn’t know the cause of death until after the post mortem is conducted in Brisbane on Tuesday.

He confirmed they were connected by a chain.

A former friend has has given an insight to the alarming life of Mr Smith and his partner, who she described as “spiritually fanatical”.

The fortune teller, who briefly worked for the couple, said she “distanced” herself from the Goldmans (Darryl Smith and his wife) in December “within a month of knowing them”.

“The first day I went into the shop to work for them they were telling me about their plans and how they were just about to commit suicide before the shop, a ‘gift from god’,” she said.

The woman claimed the Goldmans confided in her about how they had “sold everything” and “bought a box of pills through the mail.”

While the circumstances surrounding their deaths are still unknown, police have ruled out the possibility that a third person was involved in the death of Mr Smith and the woman.

“I’m not saying it’s not suspicious, I’m saying we’re going to investigate with an open mind and at this stage our inquiries have lead us to believe we're not trying to find another person involved,” Inspector McCusker said.

“What were appealing for are for members of the public who may have seen the 2004 white Holden Commodore wagon parked at the Gordonbrook dam sometime prior to March 13 to come forward to police or who may have seen or know of the movements of Darryl Smith,” Inspector McCusker said.

The vehicle, which belonged to Mr Smith, was found with a blowup bed next to it.

Inspector McCusker said police have been in contact with Mr Smith’s family who are helping police trace his steps.

“Well obviously to lose a loved one – whether it be in this set of circumstances or at all – is a very traumatic thing and we pass on our thoughts at this time,” he said.

After the discovery the South Burnett Regional Council said it had temporarily stopped the blended drinking water supply from the dam and was now taking 100 per cent of its supply from Boondooma Dam.

Investigations are ongoing.
