A man who terrorised and threatened a mother outside Kingaroy State School while she was waiting for her children, before weeks later creating a fracas at the police station that left him with a broken arm, has been placed on 12 months probation.

Colin Michael Lane pleaded guilty in Kingaroy Magistrates Court on Monday to common assault, public nuisance, assaulting a police officer and obstructing a police officer.

Police prosecutor Lisa Manns said on August 25, 2023 a woman was in her car at the school drop-off, waiting for her children, aged six and nine, when Lane walked past and yelled abuse at her.

When she went to drive away, he “stood in the middle of the road” and when she slowed her car down he “started screaming abuse at her”, Sergeant Manns said.

The woman gave him the finger and continued driving when he got out of the way, she said.

Lane then started screaming things like “you’re a f---ing s--t’” and accusing her of trying to hit him in her car, the court heard.

He put his fists up and started throwing punches towards the car saying, “I’ll f---ing hit you, I’ll f---ing knock you”.

A grandmother who was picking up her granddaughter at the time told police she saw Lane “with his fists held up and back, as if ready to punch someone in the vehicle”.

“She stated he was just yelling expletives, one after the other with a lot of F-words,” Sgt Manns said.

She said Lane later told police he’d been walking when the woman “stared at him” and gave him the finger, then sped straight up to us as we were crossing” and gave him the finger again.

In a later incident, Lane entered the Kingaroy Police Station on October 8, 2023 at 4.55pm wanting to speak to an officer “about domestic violence and a shooting and stabbing”.

“The defendant was severely slurring his words at the time,” Sgt Manns said.

An acting sergeant “welcomed him in” and took Lane into an interview room.

“The defendant, on seeing the officer stated ‘why isn’t that f---ing lovely, I’m getting to speak to the bloke that’s on film from yesterday last night’,” Sgt Manns said.

The court heard Lane spoke about an incident from the night before between he and his partner before complaining about the police.

Sgt Manns said the officer questioned what Lane wanted to make a complaint about and told him to be civil.

“The defendant then got up from his chair, opened the door to the foyer, slamming the door against the wall … (he) raised his right hand in the police officers face and extended his middle finger,” Sgt Manns said.

“The defendant then yelled, ‘is it the 20-year-old boys that you like, is it’.”

Lane’s lawyer Jay Rose said Lane was referencing an incident between police and his eldest son who is now 22.

After pushing Lane out the door of the station, he stood on the footpath and shouted “loudly and aggressively”.

When police then told him he was under arrest he ran off, but was chased down and arrested.

“The defendant has attempted to punch (the officer) with his right fist, the punch was blocked and another officer approached from behind and took hold of the defendant’s arm,” Sgt Manns said.

After a struggle, Lane was handcuffed and walked back to the station.

Ms Rose said during the altercation, Lane suffered a “fracture to his arm” that needed surgery.

He was on probation at the time for similar offending, the court heard.

Ms Rose said Lane suffered a difficult childhood and said his father was a “chronic alcoholic.”

She said Lane believed he may have a brain injury from “when he was hit in the head with an iron bar”.

She said he also suffered from chronic depression and was medicated.

Lane was placed on 12 months probation and convictions were recorded.
