Cherbourg mum Jade Purcell pleads guilty to assaulting senior constable

On a hot summer’s day, a concerned Cherbourg mum made a splash about her relative’s arrest, ultimately landing her in court for assaulting a senior police officer.

A Cherbourg mum has faced court for splashing water at a police officer that was meant to be for her dehydrated relative who was being arrested.

Disability worker Jade Alana Purcell, 37, pleaded guilty to assault of a police officer at the Murgon Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The court was told Purcell hindered the performance of police while they carried out their duties arresting Purcell’s relative in Cherbourg on December 7 2022.

Police prosecutor Lisa Manns said at 2.40pm police arrived on Purcell’s property and were confronted with verbal abuse from the defendant and others.

“The police were hindered in performing their duties due to Ms Purcell’s concern for the welfare of her arrested (relative),” Sergeant Manns said.

“Police attempted to resolve the defendant’s concern and facilitated water being given to the arrested.

“The defendant and her company continued to hinder and be abusive towards police.

“During the process the defendant has thrown water at the victim, a senior constable.

“The defendant used the bottle to splash him on two separate occasions in a rigorous flicking motion.”

Purcell’s legal representative Sjaana Stephens said Purcell’s concern was that it was a really hot day and her relative was sweating profusely.

“She wanted to cool them down, the water was splashing everywhere and she does accept some of it may have gone on police,” Ms Rose Said

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair said police should be able to go about their duties without being assaulted.

Purcell was fined $500 and convictions were recorded.
