Alexander Stevenson sentenced for unlawfully possessing weapon, drug utensils

A retired fisherman wasn’t let off the hook after he was caught in possession of an illegal weapon for the third time during a police search at his home.

A hidden firearm found during a police search landed a former fisherman in the Kingaroy Magistrates Court.

Alexander Stevenson, 59, pleaded guilty on Thursday to one count of possessing pipes or utensils for use and one count of unlawful possession of weapons category A, B or M.

Police prosecutor Barry Stevens said police were carrying out a search warrant at Stevenson’s home on April 9, 2022.

“They found three bongs, a grinder, and a rifle wrapped under cloth which he admitted they were his property,” sergeant Stevens said.

“He does have a history of drug offending.”

Defence solicitor Yvette Valdez said Stevenson uses drugs to alleviate back pain.

“He has spent all of his life working, chasing tuna up and down the east coast,” Ms Valdez said.

“The weapon was given to him days before.”

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair said Stevenson’s early plea would be taken into account.

“This is your third offence for possessing weapons,” Mr Sinclair said.

Stevenson was fined $1000 and convictions were recorded.
