Nanango crash: Elderly woman flown to hospital after crash at Wickham Street and Church Street intersection

A witness has described the confronting scene of a two-car crash at a Nanango intersection, which ended with an elderly woman being flown to hospital with serious injuries.

A witness to a violent crash on Friday morning said he was “showered in glass” as two cars collided at a Nanango intersection .

Anthony Gesler said he was standing at the corner of Wickham and Church Streets when a silver sedan, driven by an elderly woman, collided with a dark grey four-wheel drive.

“I had my back turned and all I heard was this big smash,” Mr Gesler said.

He said he ran to the crumpled car and pulled the airbag from the elderly woman’s face to make sure she could breathe.

She was unconscious at the time.

Mr Gesler said thankfully one of the Wickham Street neighbours who ran to help was a registered nurse.

“While she was looking after the lady I was on the phone to the ambulance,” he said.

“I’m still trying to get over it.”

Other nearby neighbours assisted by taking the woman’s two dogs, which were travelling with her in the car, away from the wreckage and tended to the driver of the four-wheel drive.

Emergency crews, who arrived on scene just before 8.30am, had to cut the roof off the sedan to free the woman from the car.

The trapped driver was flown to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition with injuries to her shoulder and hip.

A second uninjured person was assessed on scene by paramedics.

Police stayed on the scene to direct traffic until 10am, as one of the vehicles was blocking the intersection.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
