Kingaroy's beloved Big Peanut secures place on Big Things Monopoly board
The metal homage to Kingaroy’s most iconic and traditional product has achieved the ultimate recognition – a place alongside Australia's most famous big things on Monopoly.
Kingaroy’s beloved Big Peanut has cracked its way onto the latest Big Things Australia Monopoly board game and Top Trumps deck, marking a major moment for one of Queensland’s quirkiest landmarks.
The board game and playing cards were created in partnership with Winning Moves Australia, who manufactures and distributes customised and licensed editions of Hasbro’s classic board games.
South Burnett Mayor Kathy Duff said Monopoly had always been a loved family game and, with the Big Peanut featured, was an ideal Christmas present for visitors to the region.
The initiative was originally discussed at the January council meeting, where it was revealed the partnership would cost the council about $13,800 to have the landmark featured on the board game and to receive 300 copies.
However, it was noted the games would be sold for a profit, which would be invested back into the community.
At the time, several councillors spoke against spending such a significant amount of money on the project, and said they believed the funds could be better spent purchasing big ticket items the council could use for years to come.
But most councillors were excited about the prospect of being part of the initiative and it was highlighted that the council did not spend a lot of money on tourism.
The board games will be sold at locations across the country, with 23 “big things” from the top to bottom of Australia featured on this edition.
The game includes other roadside Queensland icons like the Big Mango from Bowen, the Big Easel from Emerald and the Big Meat Ant from Augathella.
The artistic peanut statue, made up of old farming equipment, was created by acclaimed metal sculptor, Kane Minogue.
It was unveiled in 2021, and was partly funded by community contributions through a dedicated GoFundMe page, as well as sponsorships from local businesses.
The Big Things Australia edition board game and Top Trumps cards can be purchased through council visitor information centres, libraries and customer service counters.
The limited edition board game will set you back $59.95 and the cards cost $12.95.
