EASTER EDITION: 10 things to do these school holidays

The South Burnett is the best place to be these school holidays, offering a huge selection of family-friendly activities.

7pm 1. Murgon Easter Fair

THE inaugural Murgon Easter Fair is launching the school Easter holidays on Friday, April 5 from 5.30pm. Anyone wanting to join in on the fun should hop on over to Murgon's Lamb St.

There will be rides, attractions, market stalls, and food vendors at the family event. Entry is free and the main rides cost $5 a ticket.

The fun will continue well into the night until proceedings wrap up about 9.30pm.

Don't miss the visit from the Easter Bunny. He will be hopping to the festival about 5.45pm.

The Wondai Town Band will also be at the event to provide entertainment.

2. Moonlight Cinema

BRING along a blanket, some cushions, or a chair for this special Easter movie night under the stars.

Peter Rabbit (rated PG) will be playing, and there will be popcorn available.

The event is being hosted by The Proston Men's Shed at the Railway Park on Rodney St, Proston from about 5.30pm on Saturday, April 6.

There will be a sausage sizzle and drinks available.

The movie will screen from about 6.30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend the free community event.

3. Library activities

YARRAMAN Library will run school holiday activities on Thursday, April 11 and Thursday, April 18.

Bookings are essential if you want to take part in zentangle badge making on Thursday, April 11 from 10-11am.

Kids will get to design and make their own badge from start to finish, using creative zentangle techniques of drawing and colouring.

Bookings are also essential for Hydro Sphero, a fun STEM challenge. This is for kids aged eight to 12 only, and is on Thursday, April 18 from 10-11am.

Kids will be able to test their levels of ingenuity by designing a floatable robotic raft. They will then test their raft by seeing how much it can carry over a body of water.

All children under eight years old need to be accompanied by an adult.

Blackbutt, Kingaroy, Murgon, Nanango, Wondai and Proston libraries will also be holding Easter activities, including Easter bonnet parades, Easter chick hunts and egg and spoon races. Visit the South Burnett Regional Council website for more information.

4. PCYC fun

THE South Burnett PCYC will be running a free boxing program in Murgon on Mondays and Wednesdays during the Easter school holidays.

It will run from 5-6pm for kids 14 years and younger, and from 6-7pm for kids 15 years and older.

The PCYC will also hosting a Nature Art program on Monday, April 8 from 11am-1pm.

Indoor sports and games will run from 2-4pm on Tuesday, April 9.

On Wednesday, April 10, from 1-4pm, South Burnett PCYC in Murgon will host an afternoon of table tennis fun.

These free afternoon activities will continue through the second week of school holidays, on the same days and at the same times.

5. Catch a movie

KINGAROY Satellite Cinemas will be showing family-friendly films throughout the Easter school holidays.

Tickets cost $12 for adults, $10 for students, $8 for children and "$8 for all every Wednesday.

Disney's live-action remake of Dumbo is currently showing, along with The Lego Movie: The Second Part.

6. Drive to the Bunyas for a hike

PACK the kids into the car and enjoy the scenery along the Great Bunya Drive.

The Bunya Mountains are a great place to explore, whether you're going for the afternoon or wanting to stay the night.

Explore the walking tracks, look for bunya nuts or see if you can spot the resident wallabies in the area.

Take your binoculars to look for some of the park's 120 species of birds, such as the crimson rosella and bower-bird.

Picturesque picnic areas offer the perfect spot for a packed lunch.

There are also plenty of accommodation options including camping areas.

If staying the night, grab a torch and see if you can spy the native ringtail possum.

It's a good idea to set aside some time to explore the little village and stores on top of the Bunya Mountains.

7. Go bowling

KINGAROY Tenpin Bowl will be open for the school holidays, from 10am Wednesday to Sunday for both bowling and putt-putt games.

If you're wanting to play after 8pm or with bumper lanes, don't forget to ring ahead and book.

The Kingaroy Tenpin Bowl holiday special includes two games and shoes for $18.50 per person.

8. Hit the rail trail

WINTER is well on its way, so it's a good idea to make the most of a sunny day by checking out part of the South Burnett Rail Trail.

Grab your bike or running shoes, family or friends to explore the track which follows the old path of the railway line. It is ideal for riders of any skill level or age.

The track is 44km long and runs from Murgon to Kingaroy.

Experienced riders can tackle the whole trail from either direction, while those wanting a shorter ride can pick a section to explore.

9. Picnic in the park

SPENDING time outside surrounded by nature is good for your mind, body, and soul, so why not swap lunch around the kitchen bench for a picnic on the grass?

Pick a sunny day and pack your picnic basket, then find the perfect spot.

The South Burnett has many national parks and forests where families can embark on a nature-based experience.

Ficks Crossing, Lake Boondooma Dam and Bjelke-Petersen Dam all provide picturesque picnic spots, with fishing and boating areas nearby.

Boat Mountain Conservation Park offers amazing views and wildlife to be spotted on one of its four walking circuits after a picnic lunch.

Most towns throughout the South Burnett have their own parks and playgrounds if a picnic outing closer to home is what you're chasing.

10. Go go karting

RACE your mates around the South Burnett Kart Hire track in Nanango.
