SOUTH Burnett soils must grow good basil, as Nanango MP Deb Frecklington's pesto proved.

Ms Frecklington landed second prize for her home-made pesto at this year's Ekka.

She accredited the prize to her home-grown basil.

The pesto came second in the traditional basil section of this year's Ekka Show cooking competition.

This was Ms Frecklington's first time entering her cooking at the Ekka, although she has previously provided home-made baked goods to the Nanango Show.

"I'm a home cook, I love having the family around and talking to them while I'm cooking,” Ms Frecklington said.

First prize went to Joanne Webb from Dalby.

After Ms Frecklington shared her success on her Facebook page Ms Webb commented "Deb Frecklington I pipped you at the post and got first! Dalby people rock don't they.”

Ms Frecklington congratulated Ms Webb on her win and suggested the two meet up to compare notes.

Now Ms Frecklington has released her recipe, hopefully the winner Ms Webb will follow suit.

Of course, as Ms Frecklington explained, to do her recipe any justice fresh home-grown basil from right here in the South Burnett must be used.
