Concerns for Blackbutt cops who share office with detainees

Some upgrades have been authorised for Blackbutt Police Station but a local MP argues officers need an entirely new space, describing it as ‘decrepit and tiny’.

Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington said the station was not appropriate or safe for officers to work, after visiting the station and witnessing first hand the difficult working conditions.

“The building itself is decrepit, tiny and no longer fit-for-purpose,” Mrs Frecklington said.

“Most importantly, it is not safe for the police officers who must often share their workspace with the same people they may have just detained.

“The building is not functional and has severe limitations for the four officers who are now permanently stationed at Blackbutt.”

A Queensland Police spokesman said they regularly assess facilities to determine necessary upgrades, additions and safety measures.

A number of additions including security screening, fencing, signage, lighting, upgrades to firearms, facilities and radio communications technology have been authorised to progress for Blackbutt Police Station.

“Blackbutt Police continue to conduct risk assessments on a case by case basis, with a multifaceted response to ensure the safety of officers, those in police custody and the community,” he said.

Mrs Frecklington is awaiting a response from the state government to a question about if there are any plans to build a new police station.

“The community value the service provided by their local officers and it is time a new station was built in Blackbutt,” Mrs Frecklington said.

The QPS spokesman said any requirement for a replacement facility would be addressed as part of the QPS Forward Capital Works planning process.

“The QPS is committed to keeping the people of Blackbutt and surrounds safe and with a strong police presence in the area,” he said.

The Queensland Police Union and the Minister Police and Corrective Services have been contacted for comment.
