Arson investigation underway after stolen car set alight at Chinchilla

‘There was a big bang and it all lit up’: A Chinchilla woman has described the moment a car linked to a string of break-ins was torched in a paddock.

Police are investigating a suspected arson after a stolen car linked to a number of break-ins across Chinchilla was found torched in a paddock.

Emergency crews were called to the scene on Bridgeman Parade about 4.30am Thursday, where they found the car well alight.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said a suspect had been linked to the Chinchilla area.

Witness Ella Johnson-Carter, who alerted crews to the scene, said she woke at the crack of dawn to a loud banging noise and her dogs barking.

“We were looking out at the backyard and we began to see smoke,” she said.

“Then there was a big bang and it all lit up.

“There was three more bangs and you could hear the windows blow out.

“I went out the front and I could see the fire getting bigger.”

Ms Johnson-Carter said she called triple-0 and watched firefighters extinguish the blaze in just a few minutes.

Police have linked the car to a number of break-ins across the region on Wednesday night, but declined to provide any further details.
