‘An absolute gentleman’: Former mayor Reg McCallum dies

Former Nanango Shire mayor and community stalwart Reg McCallum died last week at the age of 97.
Mr McCallum was a mentor, mate and inspiration to many, and in 2008 was acknowledged as the longest serving mayor in Australasia after 32 years in the role, and eight years before that as a councillor.
He was born in Nanango on October 29, 1926, and was an active member of the community before running for council in 1968, and then for mayor in 1976.
Mc McCallum held the position of mayor for 32 years, until his retirement in 2008; but even then he was often seen at events around the region and participating in community projects.
He was a life member of the Brisbane Valley Heritage Trails Inc and an integral part of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trails formation.
Brisbane Valley Heritage Trails released a statement expressing their sadness at Mr McCallum’s death.
“He was a great character, a good friend and we will sadly miss him,” the statement read.
Councillor Kirstie Schumacher shared her own memories.
“I was fortunate to work at Nanango Shire Council when Reg was acknowledged as the longest serving mayor in Australasia,” she said.
“He was a great leader who cared about his community and the people who worked with him regardless of what job you did, he always made you feel like you mattered.
“I will always remember Melbourne Cup days when Reg would insist we shut the office and mark the occasion with a few rums.
“He was an absolute gentleman, he will be missed,” Ms Schumacher said.
Nanango LNP MP Deb Frecklington also shared her sentiments about Reg.
“Reg McCallum will be remembered as one of Australia’s longest serving local councillors, serving as mayor for 32 years of his 40-year term.
“Most of all Reg will be remembered for his quick wit, friendly nature and hard work, a perfect gentleman,” Ms Frecklington said.
Councillor Gavin Jones said Mr McCallum was a leader who was willing to share advice if people wanted it.
“I will always be grateful for his willingness to pass on to the next generation, or anyone who would listen, his life experiences, knowledge and stories.
“Throughout my early years in the South Burnett, his leadership and approachable ways gave us confidence to be our best.
“His mentoring and mateship has guided me in my current role of acting mayor and will continue to do so throughout my life,” Mr Jones said.
Mr McCallum’s wife Edna May McCallum passed away in August, 2021 when she was 93 years old.
Mr McCallum is survived by his daughter Libby and the rest of the McCallum family.
