It is believed the man was bitten on the shoulder as he was fishing at Swains Reef, about 5pm on Monday, and suffered a deep bite “down to the bone”.

He was pulling the shark into his boat when he was bitten.

A shark with a 10cm jaw was the likely culprit.

“We were alerted by the vessel itself to meet with them shortly before 7am,” said QAS spokesman Brad Miers.

“The 55-year-old male presented quite well, however had a large bite to his left upper arm.

“We had a good chat to this gentleman. He stated that he caught a large reef shark and as he went to pull it on board, it turned and bit him on the upper-arm.”

“Despite a large wound to his upper arm, he’s in a remarkable condition, very joyful.”

The attack comes just a few weeks after two separate shark maulings off Cid Harbour in the Whitsundays.

Bull sharks are believed to be responsible for both those attacks.
