A 10-year-old boy who survived the Sea World helicopter crash has had a major breakthrough in his recovery – now being able to speak – but there is still an agonising wait ahead to see if he will lose his leg.

Nicholas Tadros was critically injured in a collision between two Sea World helicopters on January 2. His mother Vanessa, British tourists Ron and Diane Hughes and chief pilot Ash Jenkinson did not survive the crash.

Since the incident, Nicholas has been in a heartbreaking battle to survive, but his priest on Tuesday, Father Suresh Kumar, revealed on social media he had been in contact with Nicholas’ father, Simon, and he was starting to speak.

“A billion thanks to God. He doesn’t have brain injury,” Father Kumar said.

“Simon is able to talk to him and Nicholas responds very clearly with names, dates, though his voice is bit slur. He is still on partial sedation.”

Father Kumar said he had since spoken to young Nicholas and he was very thankful.

“I had tears when Simon said that Nicholas wants to talk to me,” he said.

“He thanked all those who are praying for him.”

Nicholas has been making progress weekly where he has been recovering in Queensland’s Children’s Hospital.

“You know very well, how bad his condition was and it is because of our prayers he is taking baby steps in his health,” he said.

“Overall, our little champ is fighting the good fight (remember he knows karate as well…) and keeps improving,’ he said.

Despite the recent improvements, Nicholas is still facing the struggle of possibly losing his leg.

“Doctors have been trying to save this right leg which is shattered very badly,” he said.

“We have got to keep praying that his leg is not amputated as the danger of losing his leg is still looming.

“Most probably, the doctors will decide about it by next week as the virus infection is still severe.”

Father Kumar said there were fears Nicholas’ kidneys were failing and he was put on dialysis for some time.

“Gradually, his kidneys have begun to function now though not fully,” Father Kumar said.

He asked everyone to continue praying for Nicholas and anyone able to help with financial support to contact him.
