Following complaints there wasn’t a playground for older primary school kids, St John’s Parents and Friends Committee rallied to raise funds to deliver a $100,000 project sure to provide more than its fair share of adventure and excitement.
P and F Treasurer Caron Brindley said the project filled a gap to meet student demand.
“We have a beautiful smaller playground for preps to year 2’s, but there’s not really anything for students beyond those year levels,” she said.
“I have two children at the school who went through primary school and when they finished year 2, they were a little disappointed they didn’t have a playground to play on anymore.
Ms Brindley said the project was a unanimous decision by the P and F Committee.
“When we were all discussing what we want to contribute to the school, the idea of a playground for older children came up and everyone agreed.”
Despite construction beginning in late November, the new playground is complete after an impressive ten day turnaround.
“It just gives primary school children access to play, use their imagination, work together and have fun. Giving them the opportunity to just be kids during break,” she said.
Funds for the $100,000 project were raised through the school’s many fundraising events, including the Mother’s Day stall, the August race day, last year’s Moonlight Fair as well as income made through the school tuckshop.
Ms Brindley revealed that next year’s Moonlight Fair, which is typically held in October, has been brought forward to March.
She said the annual event has unfortunately been reduced to happening every second year due to not enough volunteers.
