The outstanding achievements of St John’s Catholic School students were recognised at their annual awards night with friends, family and staff gathering at Roma’s Cultural Centre to celebrate and recognise their efforts.
More than 120 students received an award acknowledging their academic, sporting and cultural contributions to the school over the past year.
St John’s Principal Jim Brennan said he was pleased with how the school had performed this year, mainly in terms of its growth.
He said this year had been a year of sustained growth both spiritually and in student numbers.
“We embraced spiritual growth through challenging every member of the school to be more like Jesus Christ, and in an increasingly secular world, our collective work ensures we develop young people educationally and spiritually in a catholic-Christian faith,” he said.
“Everyday that I enter the school, I witness students, staff and family who are warm and receipt to make a difference to the life of others through and enact mercy values.
“The school has continued to grow in student numbers and facilities. In 2022, students numbers were 783 – an increase of 20 students from the previous year (2021).
“We are projected to grow another 38 students, making it 821 students next year.”
Mr Brennan said he was pleased with the performance of the school and its community externally.
“St John’s was winner for Employer of Choice at the recent Maranoa Business Awards,” he said.
“We also have the results for last year’s Year 12 students and 99 per cent of them received a QCE.
“Of those, 25 per cent entered university, 25 per cent started an apprenticeship or traineeship and 43 per cent entered direct work or did a gap year before starting further studies.”
Despite saying goodbye to some fantastic staff members, Mr Brennan said staff turnover for this year was sitting at 10 per cent – something he believed was an amazing achievement for a rural school.
As Mr Brennan finishes his third year as principal at St John’s, he said he was proud of the whole school community’s achievements and success this year.
