A small town in regional Queensland is offering a prospective homebuyer a resourceful way to build a home for a low cost.
The opportunity arose when a new development in the South West Queensland town of St George required removal of a house from Grey St.
The Balonne Shire Council opened a tender for the purchase and removal of the dwelling from the land, but there were no takers.
A Balonne Shire Council spokesman said if anyone had tendered, even $1, the house would have been theirs.
The spokesman said residential land in recent times has sold for less than $40,000, and acreage for around $100,000.
He said the largest cost would likely be moving the dwelling onto another piece of land.
Mayor Samantha O’Toole said there was real potential for a young family to turn the house into their dream home.
“In the midst of a housing crisis and cost-of-living crisis, here is an opportunity for someone to purchase a house, relocate it and turn it into a beautiful loving home within our vibrant country community,” Mrs O’Toole said.
“Our shire offers such a great quality of life with an abundance of employment opportunities, health services, great schools and house prices at a fraction of the exorbitant cost of inner-city living.
“Our relaxed country living atmosphere and friendly community really does stand in stark contrast to a busy, erratic inner-city lifestyle.
“We would welcome the prospect of another young family, couple or person relocating this
house and turning it into their dream home to enjoy all that our town and Shire have to offer.
“We are a development friendly council and we are always willing to work with developers and investors to help bring more housing stock into the local market.
“The house itself offers plenty of character and great bones that could easily be transformed into an adored family home.”
Tenders are open until November 15 at 3pm, and can be found here.
