Roma Magistrates Court: Woman chases man down street and threatens to ‘slit his throat’

A Roma woman has fronted court after she chased a man around the garden threatening to ‘slit his throat’ as he ran onto the street pleading for help. Here’s what happened.

A couple’s booze-fuelled bickering soon turned into a full-fledged fight after a man ran onto the street begging for help claiming his wife was going to stab him.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty in Roma Magistrates Court to three contraventions of a domestic violence order and failure to comply with police orders.

Police prosecutions said from about 8am on February 4 the couple drank about two cartons of Great Northern full strength beer between them and became “quite intoxicated”.

“Around lunchtime the aggrieved (male) began to complain about the cars parked in front of the house,” prosecutions said.

By 7pm the female defendant began to “schiz out” and “called him everything but his name,” the aggrieved told police.

“The defendant went inside and started listening to music, but she could still hear the aggrieved complaining outside so she confronted him and chased him around the backyard making threats she would slit his throat,” prosecutions said.

“The aggrieved ran onto the street yelling for help saying how she was gonna stab him.

“The defendant chased him up the driveway and pushed him.”

When police arrived the defendant was “quite upfront and honest” and denied ever holding a knife, saying she was holding a stubby of beer when she chased him, the court was told.

Further, on March 8 police responded to a disturbance at the Queens Arms Hotel car park.

The defendant and aggrieved had been drinking throughout the day and listening to music, choosing one song each.

However a disagreement occurred over the selection of music with the aggrieved calling the defendant a “sl-t”, resulting in the defendant slapping the aggrieved’s face.

The defendant left the hotel immediately with her two children.

Again on March 25 police responded to a domestic dispute at a McDowall St, Roma address.

“The aggrieved told police the defendant was threatening him and not letting him in the flat, however he was unable to articulate (to police) how she was stopping him,” prosecutions said.

When police arrived, they witnessed the defendant shouting towards the aggrieved calling him a c--t and a dog.

The court was told the failure to comply with police orders charge was in relation to her not attending the police station with her identifying particulars.

Magistrate Shane Elliott said the defendant was making “threats of violence with violence”.

“It’s concerning some of these offences are happening in front of young children,” he said.

“If you want to be a role model for your children, don’t carry on like this in front of children, you’re not going to do them any favours in the future.”

The magistrate ordered her to 18 months’ probation for the three domestic violence contraventions and fined her $200 for failure to comply with police orders. All convictions were recorded.
