Jeffrey Allan Wortley pleads guilty in Roma Magistrates Court to public nuisance

A shirtless man filmed in a brawl at the Roma railway track was issued with a notice to appear after he was identified by one of the victim.

How do juries decide a verdict?

A Roma man who was spotted and filmed by witnesses engaging in a large brawl across the railway tracks had his case heard in Roma Magistrates Court.

Jeffrey Allan Wortley pleaded guilty to committing public nuisance after three victims reported him to police.

Police prosecutions said on February 26 at 12.15am police observed a large fight between seven men spilling onto the railway.

Police pulled up in an unmarked vehicle with lights and sirens, causing the group to disperse.

Later the defendant, who was spotted walking to McDonald’s, was identified by the victim as the man who assaulted him.

“Police approached him and the defendant said he did nothing wrong and continued to maintain he was not involved,” prosecutions said.

“When asked why he was shirtless, he replied by asking why the police didn’t ask one of the victims why they were shirtless.

“He tried to walk away from police and police physically stopped him. He was arrested and placed in the vehicle and maintained his innocence.”

The court was told, police reviewed footage which was taken by bystanders which clearly depicted the defendant throwing punches and pushing people (and) actively participating in the fight.

“No one wished to make an assault complaint. Police gave him a public nuisance infringement notice,” they said.

“He stated he would be contesting it in court; he got his wish and a notice to appear was issued.”

However, Wortley did not appear in court and his matter was dealt with on his behalf.

Magistrate Shane Elliott handed him a $500 fine.

No conviction was recorded.
