Wonderland with a twist

Roma Performing Arts team have taken the stage at Dalby's drama festival.

THE Roma Performing team fell down the rabbit hole and took to the stage at the annual Dalby Drama Festival at the weekend.

The group of youngsters returned to Roma with not only a wealth of acting knowledge but with the special adjudicator's award.

Supervisor of the acting troupe Trent Sellars said they had a lot of fun but faced a few challenges along the way.

"They were a little young in comparison to the other performers who were there so they obviously faced that challenge,” he said.

"The stage was also really different for the team because, here in Roma we only have a studio, so they had to re-work the show a bit with the platform they were given.

"However, they had a lot of fun and all their families went along and supported them.”

Budding actors from across the southeast gathered in Dalby to perform in the festival, now in its 24th year.

This year Roma's Peyton Horn took on the role to write the play.

"Peyton was one of the youths involved not only in the play, but she wrote it and adapted it from the original Alice in Wonderland.

She added in some new characters but kept the same sort of story line in tact.

"The adjudicator gave her a lot of feedback on how she could re-work her play to make it a little more audience friendly and I think she is going to take that feedback on board,” Mr Sellars said.

Despite not placing highly, Mr Sellars said the team stayed and watched the other productions to experience what other theatre groups were doing in southeast Queensland and was grateful to receive advice from professionals.

The performing arts team now has its sights set on performing at the Addams Family production in August.

"These youths who are involved with Alice in Wonderland are pretty much the same ones who are going to be part of the Addams Family.

"They have just finished one play and are about to take on the next,” he said.
